Course Description

This workshop is for experienced ScrumMasters and team members to advance their skills, mindset, and knowledge for coaching and facilitating teams to a higher level beyond the basics. The first part gives an overview and background of Agile Manifesto and Scrum, and hence what are the implications of such organization look like, including management, self-organization, teamwork.

The second part of the workshop explores coaching methods and tools on individuals, teams, and organization in detail. Much of the content consists of hands on exercises where participants practice coaching techniques and receive feedback from peers. Individuals include development team members, product owners, and managers. We will then illustrate how coaching conversations look like, what are the common pitfalls, and how to maintain balance between coaching and consulting.

Coaching teams session look at the dynamics of high performance teams. Not only we share techniques of facilitating different Scrum meetings, but we also look at the elements of meeting design and what makes meetings engaging. At the organizational scale, we share ways and techniques for assessment, knowing where we are before think about what changes would be appropriate. We will also explore System Thinking to think in bigger pictures and identifying unintended consequence. Then we will look into different change models understanding how the change journey looks like.

Self Learning and growing is an essential part of being a good ScrumMaster. The workshop shall conclude with useful tips and thoughts on growing oneself. This workshop is best combined with followup mentorship and supervision, which can be arranged separately.

About Daniel Teng

Daniel has many years of practical experience in agile development including scrum, XP and lean. As Odd-e agile coach, he is engaged in helping organizations adopt agile methods and agile way of thinking. Daniel is familiar with different agile methodologies such as Scrum, XP, Lean, Kanban etc. He is expert in coaching Product Owner (agile requirement management, agile estimating & planning), ScrumMaster and team members (TDD, Refactoring and Continuous Integration etc.).

Daniel the only Certified Scrum Coach in China. He is reviewer of applications of Certified Scrum Coach and Certified Scrum Professional of Scrum Alliance. Daniel started Irdeto Shanghai R&D team in January 2006 and has been leading the team adopt XP and Scrum. The team plays a critical role in developing and maintaining multi-million USD billing and customer caring system. Within four years, the team managed to delivered two major of product and the system running on many countries in multiple continents. In addition, the team now have 1 CSC, 3 CSPs (14 CSPs in total in China), 2 InfoQ editors of agile community.

Daniel is deeply involved in the agile community. In addition to reviewer of CSC&CSP application of Scrum Alliance, he is board member of Agile Tour, editor of InfoQ agile community, he has been organizer, chair and reviewer of many agile conferences in China including AgileChina, Scrum Gathering Shanghai, QCon. He is the one who introduced Agile Tour to eight cities in China which is the first community non-profit conference, and attracted more than 1,500 attendees all over the country. Daniel is a frequent speaker at AgileChina, QCon, Software Development 2.0 Conference, Scrum Gathering and so on.

About Steven Mak

Steven Mak is an Agile Coach of Odd-e team. He is interested in every part of software development activities and a variety of programming languages, from mainstream to the very exotic. He considers code quality very important as this is what fundamentally the programmers are working on and also what software company is delivering. At the moment, He is focused on test-driven development, refactoring, continuous integration, and of course Scrum.

He begins interested in programming while he was in primary school. Later obtained a Bachelor degree in Computer Science at the University of Hong Kong. To pursue better understanding of teams, customers, and products, he completed a Master degree in Business Administration at Imperial College London.
